Plaster is the best molding material ordinary people can afford to enjoy. Actually, they’re some of the cheapest and easiest moldings people can install. You don’t need to make scarf cuts for splices and or cope the inside corners. Even the outside corner does not need to be very precise like it must be with wood, MDF or polyurethane. Plaster crown molding can be fixed or repaired using the same material of plaster to fill the joint. This makes it seamless and the installation much easier for the beginner. In general, installation of plaster crown molding can be done in a similar way to that of MDF crown molding. Part One: Planning. Planning for your plaster crown molding installation is very important, especially when the crown molding you chosen has fancy design pattern. The center of the pattern should be on the center of the room and any joints are best hidden in a not so obvious location. You can start by using a compass to draw lines in the ceiling and wall, according the wall and ceiling projection of the molding. Later, use a laser guide or chalk line to see if these line are straight and level. In most case the ceiling and wall will not be straight. Since it is difficult to adjust the ceiling and wall, you have two choices: 1.Trim the moulding to fit (in this case, the plaster moulding's softness gives it a great advantage over wood or MDF crown molding) 2.Fill the gap between the moulding and ceiling or wall. What choice is the best really depends on the real situation. Next time, I will talk about the easy and unique method for putting the plaster crown molding onto the wall/ceiling.
