Home Woodwork

Home woodwork can be exciting and provide you with hours of enjoyment. There are basic tools needed for home woodwork that no well-equipped shop should be without. Some are good to have, some are necessary to make most projects.  Let’s look at the top tools that you need to make your woodworking projects go by smoothly and without a hitch.

Working dust collection and shop vacuum system.

It cannot be stressed enough how important it is to control dust in the woodwork shop.  Many of your tools may have a port that allows you to connect them to a dust collection system that you have installed, so be sure to invest in one.  A good quality shop vacuum is also important to control dust and keep the shop clean and safe.  You’ll also enjoy the improved air quality in a home woodwork shop that uses a good dust collection system.

Portable shop table.

Even though you have a work bench, you should also have a portable shop table. With a portable shop table, you can be more mobile in the shop and take the table with you wherever you go.  Look for a model with locking casters that allow you to roll the table where you want it and then lock it in place for stability.

Sawhorses.

Sawhorses are an old carpenter’s stand by, and no authentic woodworking shop, no matter how small, is complete without a pair of them.  There are unlimited needs that you will have in the home woodwork shop for saw horses. Look for a pair of sawhorses that are stackable and will hold up to 500 pounds of weight.  You can either buy a pair or easily build a pair.

Appropriate tool storage.

You’ll find (or may have already) that you can invest a lot of money in the tools that you own.  Having a great tool storage system is imperative to maintaining an organized woodshop.  Opt for sturdy metal or wood storage.  Some folks even like to build their storage systems themselves to save money.  Your tools will have a longer life and your shop will be safer and easier to use with a tool storage system.

Woodworking bench and vise.

This is an absolute must have and will be the thing you use most often in your shop.  The woodworking bench should be a sturdy table and thick top that is steady enough to handle all of your work.  Your bench should also have holes that hold pegs that are movable from hole to hole that when used in combination with the vise can hold your work in place for you.
