Tips for Installing Window CasingWith some basic preparation, tools and tips, installing window casing is a breeze.Decorative moldings and window casings can really dress up a room, and doing the inside trim work for yourself once a window is installed can allow you to save a substantial amount of money. Installing window casing can be a wonderful and inexpensive way to add distinctive style to your rooms without costing an arm and a leg. Many do-it-yourselfers find that installing window casing is not that difficult when they have the right tools to work with. When installing window casing and trim, there are four components to consider for a picture-frame style trim: the sill (or stool), the apron beneath the sill, the case molding, and the jamb between the inside wall and the frame. The sill is first installed, forming a ledge at the window's bottom, followed by installation of the top extension jamb. The next step is to install the side extension jambs and fill gaps around the window with quality insulation. When installing window casing, start with the sides and then add the top piece. Finally, secure the apron to the wall studs for a beautifully finished window. While installing window casing, some tools that are handy to have around include: tape measure, combination square, sandpaper, sanding block, table saw, miter saw, safety goggles, wood glue, finishing nails, wood putty, nail set, and a block plane. You might also want to ask a buddy to come help out to make the installation process much simpler. |
