Installing a Wood Shelf Bracket

A Simple Guide to Installing Wood Shelf Brackets

Beautiful items deserve a beautiful place upon which they can be displayed. You want to make sure that the wood shelf bracket you choose to hold up these beautiful items is not only sturdy but coordinates with the décor and style of the room. Brackets come in many different styles, thickness and colors.

Wooden shelf brackets are available in different types of woods and stains. You will be able to choose from unstained to a black walnut color to match the décor of any room. One suggestion we have is that if you are going to go with unstained wood shelf brackets that you get the shelf unstained as well; then when you are ready everything can be stained at the same time so they match seamlessly. Wood brackets can be plain or they may have woodwork patterns scrolled into them. After they have been stained you are ready to install them on the wall.

First thing you will want to do is take your stud finder, if you have one, and find the wall studs and mark the spots with tape. Using your level draw a thin line where you want the supports to go. Keep in mind when doing this to allow space for your shelf to sit on top of your wood shelf bracket. Nothing like getting your shelves too high or too low and having to start over with extra holes left in your walls. Your brackets should be spaced far enough apart to provide any needed weight bearing stability for your shelf. Spacing will vary based upon the length of your shelf. The longer your shelf the more wooden shelf brackets you will need.

Next you will need to drill your starter holes into the wall studs for the brackets. Starter holes help the screws go in easier and help keep the wood studs from splitting as the screws grip into the wood. It's time to install your wood shelf brackets to the wall; using an electric or manual screwdriver drive the screws into the bracket and the wall. Don't over-tighten the screws because you don't want to strip them or cause the wall stud or wooden bracket to split as it won't hold your shelf and could cause structural damage later on down the road. After your wood shelf brackets are installed you can set your shelf on top of the brackets and using a countersink bit mount the shelf onto the bracket.

Now stand back and admire your handiwork! Shelving can add architectural style, functionality and much need storage space to any room. Your wood shelf brackets extend that architectural style and complete the room. Adding style, design and even functionality doesn't have to be expensive, difficult or time consuming. With some well thought out plans and a little patience you can transform any room.
