Kitchen Sink Shelf

A kitchen sink shelf can provide you with a great added space for displaying special items, holding dish detergent, or even a spot to place your rings while you’re scrubbing pots and pans.  Although there are tons of kitchen sink shelf options on the market today for homeowners to choose from, there is definitely an appealing aspect to designing and building your own kitchen sink shelf – and most anyone with even the smallest bit of carpentry “know-how” can do it.

Do-It-Yourself Kitchen Sink Shelf

To begin constructing your own do-it-yourself kitchen sink shelf, measure the width of your kitchen sink.  Determine if you want your kitchen sink shelf to go over the top of your kitchen faucet and faucet handles or behind them.  If you want your kitchen sink shelf to sit behind the sink, you’ll just need to measure the width of the sink in this step; if you want one of the over-the-sink kitchen sink shelf designs, add an additional four inches to the measurement that you have taken.

Building Your Kitchen Sink Shelf

  • The materials you will need to make your kitchen sink shelf: a one-by-six piece of wood stock, circular saw, drill with half-inch diameter bit, two nine-inch dowels with half-inch diameter, two blocks of wood –one inch by five inches long, wood glue, sand paper, and stain, varnish, or paint if you desire to add a finished look to your kitchen sink shelf.
  • From your one-by-six wood stock and circular saw, cut the appropriate length based on the measurement that you have decided to use for your kitchen sink shelf, according to the style of kitchen sink shelf you plan to build.
  • You will now use your drill to make the holes for the dowels that will support your kitchen sink shelf.  Drill a hole in each wooden block, and a whole in each part of the one-by-six that coordinates with where the dowels will go.
  • Use wood glue in the holes to add extra stability when your kitchen sink shelf is assembled.
  • You can leave your kitchen sink shelf in an unfinished condition for a rustic look, or you can choose to sand and paint or stain your shelf to better complement your kitchen décor.

This kitchen sink shelf can also be easily constructed for use in the bedroom, bathroom, living room or other parts of the home.
