Wine Glass Shelf

One of the handiest storage solutions for behind the bar or in the kitchen is a wine glass shelf.  A wine glass shelf allows for upside down storage of your wine glasses that will keep them dust free and ready for use the next time you pop a cork on your favorite bottle of wine.  Perhaps even more importantly, a wine glass shelf will allow you to store your wine glasses safely, out of harm’s way.

There are tons of pre-fabricated wine glass shelves on the market for you to choose from, most of them starting under $100, although prices can definitely climb even higher depending upon the type of material that the wine shelf is constructed with, the detail of the wood work, and the size of shelf that you demand for your needs.  There are pre-fabricated choices for any taste and all decors.

Pre-Fab or Custom Built Wine Glass Shelf?

Although it may be more convenient to run to the local Pier 1 Imports or Pottery Barn to grab a pre-fab wine shelf, there are tons of do-it-yourselfers out there that prefer to build their own one of a kind wine glass shelves.  Building your own will not only save you money, but will also provide you with the satisfaction of constructing something that is needed for the home and makes a good weekend project.  There are many woodworking plans for this type of project (check your local library or search for plans online), or (if you are handy enough), you can create your own design and finish it off with decorative crown molding and other accents.  When building your own wine glass shelf, keep these tips in mind to make your shelf an heirloom that will last forever and be a beautiful addition to your kitchen, dining area, or bar:

  • Allow for expansion of the wine shelf if you plan to add additional glasses later on down the road.  While your wine glass shelf might be designed for just those wine glasses that you currently own, if you decide to purchase more later, your design should allow for the add on later.
  • Sketch out the wine glass shelf design onto your chosen wood stock and have all of your supplies on hand when you begin construction.  Common materials and supplies needed for this type of project include wood stock, wood glue, measuring tape, table saw, hammer, sand paper, pliers, and a pencil. Having everything in one place will make your wine shelf project more successful and allow you to make the best use of the time you have allotted for the project.
  • Add a unique touch of class to your wine glass shelf by having a mirror pre-cut to your project specs.  Most home stores or hardware centers can cut a custom mirror at very minimal cost that will make your project look even nicer.
  • Don’t rush.  Take your time when creating your wine glass shelf.  If you can’t finish it in one weekend, make it a two weekend project.  The extra time spent on details and by being particularly cautious with cuts will pay off in the end when you have an attractive wine glass shelf for your home, made by your own hands!
