Bedroom Shelves

Building bedroom shelves can be a fun, do-it-yourself weekend project that nearly anyone can complete. Whether you want bedroom shelves to display knick-knacks and mementos, or to help put order to the chaos of toys, stuffed animals and books in a child's bedroom, bedroom shelves can add the needed display and storage space that you need.

Tools/Materials Needed to Build Bedroom Shelves

To complete your bedroom shelves project, you will need framing material (2 X 2's), 1/4" birch plywood, spackle, measuring tape, wood glue, staple gun, staples, miter saw, sandpaper, hammer or pneumatic pin nailer, pin nails, level, drill & bits, screws, and safety goggles for eye protection.

Designing Your Bedroom Shelves

Create a drawing of the existing space that you wish to install bedroom shelves in - this will give you a good idea of the amount of framing material that you will need and other supplies.

Many woodworkers decide to go with a floating shelf system that is attractive yet strong - made of hollow shelves that are attached to a cleat and mounted to the wall. Although you can choose any design of bedroom shelves you wish, this article will deal with constructing bedroom shelves in the floating shelf design.

Step by Step Building Your Bedroom Shelves

Determine the dimensions of your shelves and the number of shelves that you will need.
Cut the wood for the bedroom shelves. In the floating design, shelf frames are made from 1 X 2's.
Cut the pieces for the outside shelf frames, cross braces and mounting strips according to your pre-determined measurements.
Use the ¼" birch plywood to make thin skins for your bedroom shelves. Cut them to width and length with a table saw.
Arrange all pieces to begin assembly of your bedroom shelves. Think of each shelf as a hollow core door with a light framework with a top and bottom thin skin.
Build shelf frame by gluing and nailing the frame together, and then applying glue to the cross braces and nailing them into their appropriate place.
Glue and set the plywood skins into place, using staples to pull the skins into contact with the frame as the glue dries, completing one side, and then flipping over to complete the other.
Trim and finish your bedroom shelves and add facing trims as desired.
Paint bedroom shelves before attaching to the wall.
