Closet ShelvingNo closet is optimally functional unless it has adequate closing shelving. If you have things falling out on the floor when you open the closet door, that’s a good sign that you need to rethink the closet shelving that you have in place. If your closet has become a catch-all for everything in the house, it is time you redesigned the interior for maximum usability. And don’t worry, an organized and tidy closet doesn’t have to be empty; in fact, by organizing your closet and making better use of or adding closet shelving, you can stuff even more stuff in there! Let’s look at a closet shelving re-do that is easy to accomplish and light on the budget. Shelving Re-Do: Planning The first part of your closet shelving makeover will involve designing your closet in order to get the maximum usage out of this space. Make a list of what you want or need to store in this closet. From shoes, clothing, folded sweaters, boxes of files, whatever; figure out what needs to be in the closet so that you can design your closet around what you’re storing. Measure the space that you have inside the closet. Make a sketch of how you would like to lay out your closet. Do you want to hang pants along the bottom on a dowel, shirt across the middle, and have two or three shelves across the top running the length of the closet for storage of folded items, shoes, and miscellaneous? Once you have the basic needs on paper, you can determine if you want to go with a pre-fabricated closet shelving system or if you would prefer to save a bit of money and build your own. Pre-Fab versus Building Pre-fabricated options for closet shelving usually feature hangers and brackets made of wire that is coated with rubber. These closet shelving systems can be quite pricey, but they are available in various sizes and different depths and allow for rods that hold hanging clothing. Pre-fab options also sometimes feature harder to create storage systems for shoe collections, etc. On the other hand, if you are a bit handy in the woodshop, you can always build your closet shelving units. They will be sturdier and you can customize them to your liking. Using the materials of your choice and your own designs, you can create shelving, drawer systems, and racks. There are also many closet shelving plans that will give you step by step instruction on building the system that works best for your closet, no matter the size. The main advantage to constructing your own closet shelving system is that you can expect longer life and a more aesthetic appeal. Plus you get the satisfaction of creating something for your home.
