Designing Your Custom Closet Shelf System Before you begin building your closet shelf system, you will need to measure your closet to determine the size and number of supplies that you will need to purchase. You should also take into consideration the items that you want to storage in your closet. Will you be storing just clothing and shoes, or do you have other items that will be tucked inside? Keep in mind that hanging shirts and pants will require a specific area of height (around 40”) and dresses or coats (around 65”). By knowing in advance where you want each group of items to hang, you can take appropriate measure to allow for the amount of room needed for each area. Draw out a use on graph paper for every space in your closet shelf system. Building Your Custom Closet Shelf System After your custom closet shelf system plan has been put to paper, you can remove the old closet shelf materials from your closet. Use your tape measure to mark and drill holes for new closet shelves (you can also use a jig or template that is designed for this purpose). Be certain that the drill bit you use is equivalent to the shelf pins you have purchased. Insert the closet shelves and make any adjustments by trimming the closet shelf ends. Finally, attach and install the closet rods.
