Crown Molding Shelf Plans

Crown molding adds a touch of elegance and depth to a room.  When purchasing crown molding for a space, you need to purchase extra to account for waste produced when you make cuts.  Now that it is installed, you have scrap pieces that can be used in crown molding shelf plans.

Plans

Finding crown molding shelf plans is quite easily done.  They are available online.  A simple search for crown molding shelf plans will provide an abundance of results.  Do your homework and make sure you understand them completely.  Unless you are okay with going out and purchasing more material, remember what you have to work with is a limited supply.

Many magazines will have articles on crown molding shelf plans.  Be careful here, some are quite vague and only give you a very limited idea of how to actually construct the project.  Your home improvement center will have many books available for purchase with a plentitude of projects, which, on the flipside, can be very specialized and difficult to understand.  Find your project idea and read through it, no matter where you get it from.  Make sure it makes sense before jumping in.

Construction

If you installed your own crown molding, then following a crown molding shelf plan will not be very difficult.  The main issue, as is always true with any crown molding project, is getting the angle cut just right.  Building a shelf is actually much easier than installing crown molding in a room, however, because you can make the cuts a true ninety degree angle and they will be perfect.  Whereas, in your home, the angle is rarely a true ninety degrees.

In addition to your crown molding scraps, you will need a piece of one-by to make the top, and in some crown molding shelf plans the bottom, of the shelf.  Try to get the same wood as the crown molding, if you are planning on painting, this will not be necessarily important.

Installation

When mounting to the wall, make sure you plan your hardware choices well.  Think about what you will be placing on the shelf and what kind of weight that will entail.  Be diligent about finding wall studs when placing the shelf and use a level to ensure a nice visual effect.  Larger shelves, or multiple shelves, will require planning and measuring.  If you do not take the time to get a large unit centered, the appearance will be off and your efforts will be underappreciated.  Multiple shelves should be arranged in an appealing display, make sure you do not over do, crown molding is a bold statement and speaks volumes in just a few pieces.

Crown molding shelf plans can be an easy project, but, when done with care, make an eloquent addition to your space.  Take your time and then enjoy them for all they are worth.
