Build a Fireplace Mantel

If you would like to build a fireplace mantel as a weekend project, it doesn't have to be a complicated task. Build a Fireplace Mantel – Do-it-Yourself!

Fireplace mantels may be made of various materials, although most do-it-yourself fireplace building projects use wood which is either natural or stained or varnished.  If you're using a fireplace kit, everything that you will need is usually supplied in one convenient box, complete with instructions.  You can save a lot of money, however, if you choose to build a fireplace mantel yourself.  Fireplace mantels can be plain or detailed with crown molding accents, mantels can have pilasters (legs) or even feature store on the side (such as a bookcase).  The mantel can be just a shelf that rests over the fireplace or it can extend the full length of the ceiling.  No matter what design you choose when you decide to build a fireplace mantel, you can be as creative or traditional as you like, creating a rustic looking mantel or a heirloom quality mantel that looks as distinguished as a piece of fine furniture.

Build a Fireplace Mantel – Design Phase

When you build your fireplace mantel, you can choose to build it in place or as a separate unit that you install later.  If you are having a stone mason come in to set materials for your fireplace, he may ask that you build a fireplace mantel and have it in place before he begins his work.  Either way, designing your fireplace mantel requires that you carefully plan out the dimensions and features beforehand.  To do this, carefully measure the width of the surround, and then add ¾".  Measure above the firebox and take measurements from both sides.  During the design phase, also determine if any reinforcements in the wall will need to be made in order to support that fireplace. To build a fireplace mantel, you must always make sure that the mantel adequately deep in order to display various items – and keep in mind that what you display this year might be different years from now, so always allow plenty of room in your design.  Make a rough sketch of the fireplace that you plan to build.
