Cabinet Hardware Installation

Installing hardware on your cabinets can give your old cabinets a new look or add just the right touch to your new cabinets.

If you have been remodeling or renovating your bathroom or kitchen, you may be wondering about cabinet hardware installation. Changing the hardware on your cabinets can give your old cabinets a new look, or perhaps you have purchased all new hardware for your new kitchen cabinets. Cabinet hardware installation is a fairly simple process and the tools for installing your cabinet's hardware are more than likely already laying around your home.

The hardware for your cabinets includes the handles, pulls, and hinges that make your cabinets work and make them easier to use. For cabinet hardware installation, you will need masking tape, a power drill, a marker, measuring tape, hammer, nails, screwdriver, and a level. Depending on the size of your cabinet hardware, you will need the appropriate drill bit, usually a 3/16" bit will be needed. When replacing existing knobs and pulls, try to purchase some that have the same configuration of screw holes to avoid needed to patch the existing holes.

Installing Cabinet Knobs

Knobs are fairly straightforward to install, primarily because there is only one screw to deal with. Pulls, on the other hand, have two screws that must be placed in exact holes. Some knobs have the screws already attached; for those that do not, you will need to find the appropriately sized screw for the knob, which can be determined by the thickness of the door or drawer that you are installing the knob on. A one inch screw is the typical size for most cabinet doors.

Installing Cabinet Pulls

Before proper cabinet hardware installation can take place, its very important that you take precise measurements before drilling holes for screws. Many folks make the mistake of measuring the length of the entire pull or handle instead of the distance between the two screw holes - so be certain that you take the measurement between the two screw holes accurately, or better yet, draw a template on paper to go by.

Installing Cabinet Hinges

An important hardware installation tip is to install the hinges onto the cabinet door before mounting the door onto the cabinet. This can save a great deal of time and ensure more precise placement of your cabinet door hinges. A good rule of thumb is to use a combination square to position your new cabinet door hinges at two inches from the top and two inches from the bottom edges. Mark your new screw locations accordingly on the cabinet, and then simply hang your cabinet doors on the cabinet frame.
