Cherry Crown Moulding

Crown molding is such an easy and cost-effective way to change the look a room.  Cherry crown molding is a rich and classical choice that will add warmth to any room in your home.

Cherry Hardwood

Cherry is a hardwood that has held its popularity for many generations.  This may be due to the many, beautiful reds in the fine grain of cherry wood.  Woodworkers love to work with this particular wood, perhaps because it is a medium weight hardwood that is easily tooled and takes on shape easily.  Likewise, consumers enjoy finished products in cherry because it sands to a lustrous sheen and will actually get darker with age.  Rather than blanching with exposure to light, it will again darken.

Crown Molding

Cherry crown molding will add a richness and depth to any project.  The wood will best take to a natural finish, as it does darken with age.  However, if you feel the desire to use a darker stain, a gel stain is best for this wood.  Gel stains do not sink into the wood, and by staining just the top layers, you will get a more uniform finish and avoid the problem with blotchiness.  By using a darker stain, you will hide many of the natural red hues and make the grain difficult to appreciate.

Crown molding can achieve many different effects.  You can go for a very simple look or create an elaborate project.  Consider the size of your room to ensure you don’t over power it with your cherry crown molding.  Sculptured and embossed crown moldings are more ornate in their décor, and, likewise, more costly.  A simple lathed effect is the most cost effective.

Shopping

Before you can shop, you need to get the measurements for your cherry crown molding.  Add the length together and then add 10% to ensure you will have enough to account for the scraps left behind when making cuts, or for any cutting errors. Most home improvements centers will have crown molding and even carry some cherry crown molding.  Do not be surprised if you need to order it.  With this in mind, you may decide to contact a local craftsman to custom create your look. Shop around and find exactly what you want.  It will be well worth your patience once you finally get that desired effect.

Installation

If you purchase unfinished cherry crown molding, you will want to finish it before installation, although, there will be some minor touch ups once the crown molding is up.  Staining is no fun while the wood is attached to a wall eight or ten feet off the floor.

The installation of your cherry crown molding may be easier if left to a professional.  When you purchase your crown molding you may be able to get a quote for the installation as well.  Installation requires the use of a miter saw and this can be a very tricky cut to get right. Once your cherry crown molding is installed and all the finishing touches are completed.  Just sit back, relax, and enjoy your room.
