Dental Crown Moulding

Dental crown molding is considered one of the more ornate of the crown moldings.  The pattern resembles a row of teeth giving it the name, dental.  A small row of blocks runs along the bottom of the crown molding giving it an Athenian style.  The blocks are generally the same measure in width as in depth and the spaces between can either be half the measure or, less commonly, of equal measure.  The pattern can be found on much of the old Greek and Roman architecture.

Crown Molding

Crown molding is generally placed along the top edge of the wall at an angle into the ceiling.  It can be stained or painted to match the décor of a room.  The styles of crown molding vary from a simple lathed piece to elaborate multi-tiered pieces.   Dental crown molding fits into this latter style and can be a single piece or multi layered.

Shopping

Crown molding can be found at most home improvement centers.  Some simpler varieties of the dental crown molding can be found there, but, more often, it will have to be custom ordered.  Before leaving the house, make sure you measure your rooms and then account for about 10% waste.  As you make cuts there will be scraps and if you do not order enough material, you may end up short.

Other alternatives to the home improvement centers would be shopping online or working with a local craftsman.  Some of the local craftsman can create some very nice custom dental crown molding to suit your personal tastes.  They can come to your project site and discuss the different sizes and styles of dental crown molding with you.  They may have samples that you can use to help visualize the finished job.

Being patient in the selection process will pay off in the end.  It is no fun walking into a room wishing you had gone a different direction.  Any professional you are working with will understand this and will not try to rush you through the process.

Installation

As you can imagine, the installation can be difficult for those who have never worked with dental crown molding before.  The most difficult part is learning how to get the corner cuts just right.  Most corners are not actually ninety degrees.  So, knowing what the right equipment is and how to use it will help you avoid gaps where the pieces meet together.  If you are particularly unfamiliar or uncomfortable with installing your crown molding, you might consider letting a professional do this part for you.  Whether you are ordering from the home improvement center or the skilled craftsman, the option of installation should be available.  If ordering material online, you can check on the availability of installers, but expect to have to find your own.

After your dental crown molding in installed and the finishing touches have been completed; sit back, relax, and enjoy your new room.  This is when all of the little choices you made throughout the process can really be appreciated.
