rope crown moulding Rope crown mouldings are made from a variety of materials. The most common material for rope crown moulding, of course, hardwood.

Hardwoods such as maple oak and cherry are prime candidates for crown moulding. They stain well, and these hardwood species are relatively abundant, so you will find most rope moulding for sale is made from these three woods.

You can also find rope crown molding made from medium density fiberboard (MDF). MDF is essentially sawdust and glue pressed together. The result is a dense material that can be made cheaply, and cut just like real wood.

Synthetic polymer based mouldings are becoming more common as well and since sythetic material is easily shaped and molded, rope crown molding, with it's intricate detail, is often made from polystyrene or polyurethane.

Typically, when a rope is present on crown molding it is actually a seperate piece and had been applied with an adhesive or staples or a combination of the two.

Rope mouldings are also often called "braid moulding" or "braid molding" and occaisonally you may see or hear them called "ribbon molding" or "ribbon moulding".
