Decorative Crown Moulding

Decorative Crown Molding

Decorative crown molding can make a dramatic difference in the overall appeal of any room in your home.  Decorative crown molding, as opposed to plain crown molding, can add a flair of elegance to make your room’s walls have a more finished look.  Transforming even the plainest looking rooms is easy with the many varied choices of decorative crown molding available on the market today, which gives you, as a homeowner, the ability to turn your living room into the perfect Victorian-era parlor or a charming and tastefully appointed den.

Highlight Your Room, Hide Any Flaws

Decorative crown molding can be used effectively to highlight the best features of your room, or can be used to camouflage any mistakes or flaws in the room.  Oftentimes, homeowners will install decorative crown molding as a beautiful trim around doorways, including French doors, or around the fireplace or fireplace mantel.  No matter how you use your decorative crown molding, you can be sure that it will make your room look distinctive and classy.

One of the best aspects of installing crown molding in the home is its versatility.  Much of the crown molding on the market is made of wood, which makes it easy to stain or paint to match the existing furniture and trim in your room.  The most popular hardwoods that are used for decorative crown molding are maple, oak, mahogany, alder, cherry, ash, hickory, and poplar.  Decorative touches to these molding might be in patterns of grapes, oak leaves, shells, and others.  But decorative crown molding made of wood may be more expensive than other available options and may swell or shrink depending on the conditions of humidity in the room in which it is installed.

Decorative Crown Molding Choices

There are other options for you when selecting the decorative crown molding that you will install in your home.  Let’s look at some of the other popular alternatives to wooden decorative crown molding that you might want to consider:

  • Decorative plaster molding – has the advantage of being able to craft unique designs and adds a very chic touch to the room – although it can be quite expensive.
  • MDF crown molding – wood based materials are combined with synthetic resins to create a warp resistant product that is easy to cut but usually must be finished by hand.
  • Flexible molding made from polyurethane – great for those arched doorways and windows because it will bend as needed (without breaking) but can be stained or painted just like wood molding without worrying about priming first.
  • Styrofoam or expanded polystyrene molding crown molding – light weight, inexpensive, durable, and will adhere to most surfaces.  This is the best type of molding for do-it-yourself homeowners who want the look of decorative crown molding without the high price tag.
  • Vinyl crown molding – gives the look of plaster without the expense.  This is also the best choice for decorative crown molding installation outside because of vinyl’s resistance to rot, corrosion, and warping, no matter the weather, and the fact that insects (like termites) will not attack it like they will wood molding.
