There are about as many options available in the polyurethane crown molding as there are in the hardwoods.  The one limiting factor would simply be that you cannot hire a skilled craftsman to help you create something unique.  You will be restricted to the pages of catalogs and their selections.  This is not necessarily a problem, as the pages of their catalogs are many and the styles are very broad ranging.  There are the simple single lathed patterns, the embossed, and the elegant and elaborate sculptured choices; all with pre-made corners and joints.  Matching your décor will not be a problem.

While you may be able to find a few selections in your local home improvement center, most of your choices will need to be custom ordered.  Make sure you speak with someone who knows the requirements for installing polyurethane crown molding when you order.  Have your exact room dimensions and the corners needed with you when you order.  When ordering, be sure to get the recommended adhesives, using an adhesive other than that recommended can void any warranties.

There are quite a few options online, as well.  You may be better off doing some research and looking around on the internet to familiarize yourself with what is available.  Ordering online is safe and equally as quick as ordering from your local store.  There is also the advantage of talking with professionals who deal with polyurethane crown molding on a daily basis and can answer your questions with authority and expertise.

Installation

Installing your polyurethane crown molding is much easier than with hardwood crown moldings.  The main advantage to polyurethane, from an installation point of view, is the pre-made corners.  Taking away the need for getting those miter cuts just right makes for a very smooth install.  It is lighter and is initially placed with adhesive.  This makes nailing much smoother as you are simply stabilizing a light piece of polyurethane crown molding when driving the nail.  A breeze in comparison to the heavy hardwoods.
